1960’s Music Project
You may not be aware of the fact that musical lyrics used to have purpose. In some cases, music was even intended to
try to change certain behaviors of the listeners. It went beyond feelings, the music was meant to create an emotional reaction
that could possibly even lead to physical action in one way or another.
The music written and recorded in the 1960’s exemplifies music with a purpose. With all of the political and
social unrest, artists felt as though music was the perfect avenue to reach out to young people and voice their opinions about
civil rights, Vietnam, or anything else that was on the collective minds of the country.
This project is designed to help us examine what was happening in the 1960’s by looking at music. By breaking
down the lyrics, song by song, we will be able to see what exactly was going on in the minds of the American public as terrible
events unfolded before their eyes.
You will be working with a partner on this project. As a pair, you will draw a song out of an envelope that you will
be responsible for. The end result of this project will be a PowerPoint presentation. You will need to include the following
items in that presentation:
1) Name of the artist or group who recorded the song
2) Picture of the artist or group
3) Name of the person who wrote the song ( if different than the recording artist)
4) A narrative of how this song represents the 1960’s
5) Identification of the issue the song was written about
6) Images found on the internet that represent the song
7) Lyrics of the song
8) Anything else that you think would be interesting for us to know
I will give you as much help as you need with PowerPoint. You may not have ever used it before. Trust me when I tell
you that it isn’t difficult, you can learn the necessities very quickly. Each pair will be loaned a CD that has
all of the songs for the project on it. You will not need to go out and find the song on your own. For research purposes,
there will be a link to the CFHS Library web page for our project. You are not restricted to the sites on that page.
